Nothing is more aggravating than a kid who knows more about computers than a parent does. These days, with the constant and almost in–your–face presence of technology, it's no wonder so many kids know so much about computers. Last year, a friend attending a business meeting in the same town where his nephew lived, took his failing Blackberry to the lad who promptly disassembled and repaired it.

The lesson here is that if a parent wants to relate to kids today about computers, then a parent may need to attend a computer class or get some sort of a crash course on just how these mysterious, magic boxes function. How will a parent know what a child is doing online unless a rudimentary understanding of computers can be attained? That knowledge may come from the best teacher–a kid.

When children are still young, parents can still exert some power and influence over them. When kids become teenagers, suddenly they know more than the parents and are a certifiable expert on everything. If parents wait until kids are in the teen years to establish a trust relationship, then communication may be difficult.
