Overview
Founded in 1874 in Golden, Colorado, the Colorado School of Mines is a research university with one of the highest admissions standards of any public university in the United States. Each year approximately 10,000 applicants compete for 875 spots in the freshman class. The University has a student/faculty ratio of 14:1 with a total 4,500 students. There are 155 student campus organizations, 18 intercollegiate teams, and 36 research centers located on the campus. The school mascot is Blaster the Burro and the athletic teams are called the Orediggers.

Constructed in 1908 by 250 students and 20 faculty instructors, the “M” monogram on the side of Mount Zion by the campus can be seen for miles and is illuminated every evening. Each incoming freshman carries a 10-pound rock from campus to the M and coats the symbol with a fresh coat of whitewash. Graduates may return to the M to retrieve their rocks.
