In 1997 Oscar Temaru was the indomitable mayor of Faa’a. He had a crucial ambition of economic security for French Polynesia. I took an opportunity to interview him at the time.

French Polynesia is made up of tiny islands in the middle of a great ocean, an ocean that has one of the vastest resources of potential wealth left on this planet. There is a race to control this resource. It is between the French Polynesians and the European multi-nationals. Oscar Temaru is fighting for the rights of his people to be the victors.

Oscar Temaru lives in one of the most idyllic islands of the Pacific; a land where tourists come to relax in the sun and leave renewed by the peace and beauty of this amazing place. Under the surface, however, there are problems. Problems that go unnoticed to the casual visitor. The people are too polite and respectful to involve visitors in a reality common to many western countries today. For here in this island home the indigenous people are at least ten percent unemployed, eighty percent without any kind of high school leaving certificate and are the least likely to make average incomes no matter how hard they try.
