Check Computer Power Usage

A broken computer may seem intimidating to the novice user, but there are some simple signs to watch out for when trying to determine the source of the problem. These can help to determine what extra maintenance the computer requires above the normal user maintenance.

Starting the Computer

The first and most obvious problem is a computer that will not start up normally. The user should begin by unplugging it entirely (and in the case of laptops, removing the battery) to eliminate the possibility that there is an error preventing it from waking up from standby. The user should then plug it back in and press the power button.

If the computer does not give any indication that it has power (no lights or sounds from the machine, no sign of it starting normally), then no further tests are possible. The user should check the outlet and the power cable to ensure that there is electricity going into the unit.
